Meet the School Counselor “Surf the Waves of Life” Lesson

Description

This Meet the Counselor lesson teaches elementary schoolers about size of the problem, the role of the school counselor, and when to ask for help.

✨ The main idea is: “School counselors help students surf the waves of life!” We teach students “how to surf” by supporting, guiding, helping, and encouraging them through the many “waves” that life brings.

☀️ The ocean and surfing theme is SO FUN and memorable!

⭐ Students learn:

• 10 examples of “waves” that can hit in life (i.e. friendship problems, losing a pet, changing families, trouble learning)
• 3 ocean-themed sizes of the problem: “ripple” (small), “wave” (medium), “tidal wave” (large)
• Examples of each type of problem
• When to ask for support
• An introduction to their school counselor
• 6 “surfboards” that school counselors use to help students “ride the waves:” listen, help, solve, keep secrets, safety, and kindness
• The definition, purpose, and limits of confidentiality
• That “no one surfs alone” and school counselors are here to help
